AIDS treatment linked to severe brain damage
In an emerging number of cases, according to a new report, HAART (highly active antiretrovial therapy) -- the combination drug therapy which, we're told, has made HIV / AIDS a "manageable illness" -- has been linked to brain damage.
A consequence, ironically, of what the authors call "antiretroviral-associated immune restoration."
This is a very technical article, and for that reason I'm just posting the summary here with a link to the main article for those interested.
The point is however that despite analist claims that among gay men in America, the epidemic is essentially over, HIV / AIDS remains a difficult disease to treat, there is no cure and no vaccine in sight, and the treatments themselves are proving to have many very dangerous side-effects.

An Emerging Severe Leukoencephalopathy: is It Due to HIV Disease or Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy?
By Rackstraw, Simon; Meadway, Jeanette; Bingham, James; Al-Sarraj, Safa; Everall, Ian
Summary: We report an individual who had HIV-associated dementia, but a good clinical response to antiretroviral therapy, with a rising CD4 count and undetectable viral load. A severe leukoencephalopathy was noted at postmortem; however, no HIV immunopositive cells were found in the brain, suggesting that this new severe leukoencephalopathy is associated with immune reconstitution.
Keywords: HIV, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS dementia complex, encephalitis

Once again, HIV infection is not a walk in the park.
And anal penetration, even with a condom, is not safe.

Thanks for the reference to the article Bill.
Several years ago I had a POZ magazzine in my hands for the first me and its was surprising to see all those drug advertising. More and more information about drugs are more drugs and side effects.
Great. More treatment options. Excellent.
But mmm what about prevention?
I can not imagine how much Glaxo-Welcome spends in drug research and advertising.
To create and sell a product that tries to neutralize an alien pathogen into the body of a pal.
But I think that God Dammed fucking retro-virus shoudn´t have entered into that body in the first place.
TREATMENT= MILLIONS
PREVENTION= ?
HEY AIDS/ANAL Inc. Do you want to see a good slogan ?
Look at this:
THE BEST ANTI-RETROVIRAL PILL IS THAT ONE THAT YOU NEVER TAKE.
BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE TO.
KEEP HIV OUT OF YOU.
FROT IS HOT
AND KEEPS STD OUT OF YOU
But you will never see this in that magazine.
It would kill their income due to advertising.
And could save some lives in the process.
That makes it impossible.
But instead you do see a naked barebacker on a horse in the cover. And you can read his tale about how he contribuited to the death of his partner through multiple HIV mutual reinfections. And several months later this raw anal penetration lover dies due to his respective amount of reinfections.
...
AIDS/ANAL Inc. = millions
PREVENTION/FROT = ?
Best to you

Thank you Oscar.
Oscar's a true warrior.
He posts.
He donates.
He talks to community groups about Frot and HIV prevention.
What do YOU do?
Now, let's talk about POZ and HIV and money.
Here's the cast of characters:
POZ = a big glossy monthly mag aimed at the HIV+.
CPS = Community Prescription Service, a mail-order pharmacy. Owned by POZ.
Sean Strub = founder of POZ.
Stephen Gendin = CEO of CPS and barebacking "activist." Deceased.
Walter Armstrong = editor of POZ.
Brett Averill = gay journalist, my late lover.
HAART = Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy. The very expensive course of medications which is keeping people with HIV / AIDS alive.
This is the way, to the best of my knowledge and belief, it used to work at POZ.
I don't know that it still does, but this was the set-up in the mid-90s, when POZ got on the -- or created, in my view -- the barebacking bandwagon.
Like I said, POZ is a big, glossy, monthly mag, and it was the first such for people who are HIV+.
POZ claimed to print 150,000 copies per month.
Using the old journalism rule-of-thumb of four readers per copy, that's 600,000 readers per month.
Anyone could request and receive a FREE subscription to POZ.
Most who did of course were "people with AIDS" -- gay men like my late lover Brett.
How could POZ afford to do that?
POZ owned a prescription mail-order business called "Community Prescription Service" -- CPS.
Again, I don't know how it is now, but at that time many people -- including Brett -- preferred to get their monthly meds through a mail-order house.
Less hassle.
CPS was POZ's money-making arm.
And Stephen Gendin, the world's first barebacking activist, was the CEO of CPS.
POZ was, as Oscar says, full of ads from big pharma -- the huge pharmaceutical companies which have invested so heavily in antiretrovirals.
POZ subscribers were, of course, told about CPS.
And CPS in turn would send out to its customers and of course to POZ subcribers drug "advisories" on the latest meds, usually paid for by the pharmaceutical company which had developed the med.
So: POZ went out free to guys with AIDS, who were encouraged to buy the meds advertised in POZ through CPS.
POZ made money, presumably, twice: first on the ads, and then on the prescriptions.
Sweet huh?
That is AIDS Inc. in action.
In 1999 I wrote a couple Letters to POZ about Gendin, who had since died, and his negative lover Kyle McDowell, whom he infected.
POZ refused to run them.
I was a lot nicer to POZ in those letters than I would be today.
Why?
In the early days, long before antiretrovirals, there were those who accused POZ of glamorizing AIDS.
But Brett, who had AIDS, felt that POZ was simply trying to improve the self-image of guys like himself.
And that may have been true.
POZ founder Sean Strub's a bright guy, but who could have predicted the emergence of HAART and AIDS becoming a "manageable" illness?
At the time POZ was founded we were expecting a cure -- not managed care.
However, times change.
After the barebacking debacle and Gendin's death, I spent a couple years in fruitless correspondence with Strub, who had apprenticed under Brett and claimed to admire him.
I wanted Strub to do an article on Frot.
No dice.
Like Oscar says,
you will never see this in that magazine.
A few years later, there was a modest outcry about the big pharma ads featuring very handsome and sexy male models who were representing the HIV positive.
Isn't that sending the wrong message? a few activists asked.
Walter Armstrong, POZ's editor, defended the ads, saying a couple sexy models wouldn't sway anyone to have unsafe sex.
Unreal.
The purpose of advertising is to get people to change their behavior.
Usually through subliminal messages like sexy models.
Translation: the words are less important than the images.
Walter knows that.
He's in publishing.
The images say: You can get HIV and, by taking these drugs, still be a hot sexy and very sexual gay man.
That's a problem.
Do the ads talk about side-effects?
Sure.
In very very very very very very very very very small print.
Walter also defended oral, after it had been implicated in HIV transmission, calling it "transcendent."
I did manage to get a letter into POZ about that one.
I said that oral was only "transcendent" if you define it that way.
I said I define it as "dumb."
And it is.
At least 6% of seroconversions are due to oral.
Getting HIV from servicing a guy's dick is DUMB.
That's POZ.
Please note that the name of the POZ mail-order Rx company was COMMUNITY Prescription Service.
I've seen that over and over again.
Gay capitalists -- those heroes of the free market -- will use the word "community" in their business title to make it appear they are a Gay Lib / gay rights enterprise.
But any time the interests of the community conflict with those of their business -- the community is shafted.
That's GAY Inc.
That's AIDS Inc.
That's ANAL Inc.
It's not just POZ of course.
Last year, when Larry Kramer attempted to say some good things about us, he was immediately stopped by gay conservative Andrew Sullivan.
Sullivan is infected with HIV, which he got through, by his own admission -- BAREBACKING.
Sullivan, good conservative, personal responsibility guy that he is, blames barebacking on Gay Lib, a movement which had in essence died 16 years before he got HIV.
But hey, it's not Andrew's fault, it's Gay Lib's fault.
The Ghost of Gay Lib Past, an avowedly leftist philosophy, forced Andrew Sullivan, stalwart friend of free enterprise and self-described Catholic conservative, to waggle his butt in the air and say,
"Please, sir, fuck me.
Please."
Andrew didn't do it.
Gay Lib dun it.
Sullivan is a BIG supporter of BIG pharma.
The big drug companies.
He has to be.
He's utterly dependent upon them for life.
Were Frot to become popular, were ABC to become the standard, and the number of seroconversions to decrease, big pharma would lose its incentive to develop new meds.
And Andrew would die.
Why?
Because HIV constantly evolves around the antiretrovirals that guys like Andrew are taking.
Those men are dependent upon NEW meds being developed constantly.
Should that cease to happen, they'll cease to live.
Do you get it?
Gay leader and barebackin analist Andrew Sullivan has a very intense, personal, and vested interest in the continued spread of HIV.
That's why he spoke against us.
That's GAY Inc.
That's AIDS Inc.
That's ANAL Inc.
If you want to see change, you have to start supporting the Frot Movement.
That means DONATING.
Otherwise, things will NEVER change.
Because there's TOO MUCH MONEY INVESTED IN THE STATUS QUO.
Think about it, and think fast, because donations are way too low, I've been writing about this literally for years, and I'm at the end of my patience.
