I don't know whether there's any point in attempting to dialogue with someone who begins a letter stating, "With all due respect ... you should be put in jail," but I'll try.

Let me ask you a few questions:

First of all, have you ever written to the webmaster or creator of a barebacking site saying "you should be put in jail for advocating unsafe sex"?

I doubt it. What I find is that people like yourself choose to attack, in the ugliest and most threatening terms possible, the one person on the net who's actually advocating a very safe form of m2m sex (and monogamy), rather than the people who are out there pushing practices that we know to be literally deadly.

Second of all, can you point me to the page on my site where I said "there are [sic] no risk of STD transmission by frottage"?

The answer is you cannot, because I've never said that.

What I have said is that frottage is "safe," indeed "remarkably safe," compared to anal. And it is.

The word "safe," in the common usage of our community, means "puts you at very low risk for acquiring a deadly disease."

To repeat, that's what the word "safe," and the phrases "safe sex" and "safer sex," when used by members of the gay male community, are universally understood to mean. I was there in 1984-5 when a variety of people developed those terms, and that was their intention. And I know that's how these words and phrases are used to this day.

And by that definition, frot is safe. So much safer than anal that there's no comparision between the two.

That said, let me ask you some more questions specifically about safety:

1. Can you locate for me any scientific study linking frottage, decisively and unequivocally, with any STD? For example, is there even one scientific study out there which can demonstrate that a statistically significant population of men with herpes developed it through frot and not, say, oral or anal sex?

I've never seen one but perhaps you have.

2. Can you explain why I, and most of the men on my site, have NEVER had an STD? As I have stated, I was sexually active in Boston/P-town, NYC/Fire Island, and SF/Russian River from 1972 to the year 2000 -- 28 years -- and I've NEVER had an STD. And though I wasn't wildly promiscuous, I was active Jamie -- I had many partners, many of whom, including my lover with whom I had sex daily, subsequently died of AIDS, and who you can be sure were carrying other diseases. But I never got them. Can you explain why?

As I said, my story is not unique -- many other men on the site report the same -- we don't have STDs. The only men on my site who have had STDs, including herpes, and, sadly HIV/AIDS, acquired them anally.

3. Do you disagree that were we able to persuade the bulk of the "msm" population to switch from anal penetration to frottage that the STD rate would plummet?

Yes or No?

Or: Were 90% of men who have sex with men to switch from anal to frot, would we see a 90% drop-off in the rate of syphilis, gonorrhea, HIV, and hep C transmission?

Yes or No?

4. Have you read the post on my site titled About Docking, in which I go to great pains to warn people that docking is not safe? Or noted that I do not allow posts soliciting docking on my cyber-dating board?

5. Have you noticed the numerous endorsements of monogamy on the site, including a cyber-dating message board which specifically warns that were men into frot to become as promiscuous as men into anal, frot *might* become another vector for disease, and tells people to go for "quality rather than quantity"?

And do you know of any other gay male cyber-dating board anywhere on the net which says "We do not endorse promiscuity," and in which the webmaster pro-actively removes posts which have a promiscuous goal?

Jamie, do you really believe that such actions -- advocating a change from a form of sex that we know to be deadly to one which is no risk for the four most deadly STDs, warning against docking among a population of men who find it attractive, and doing everything in my power to encourage men to be monogamous -- just to mention a few -- merit my being jailed?

To any unbiased observer, mine is a site that seeks to encourage safe sex -- plain and simple. I really wonder why you think I should be in jail -- and the answer I'm sure has NOTHING to do with this phony issue of safety.

Let's get to the heart of the matter:

You say that my site, which is full of images of men joyfully, smilingly, happily, and with full erections, embracing each other, with poetic acccounts of the ardent love which I shared with another man, and of stories and historical accounts of sacred male sexual bonding, is homophobic.

Really?

Have you ever written to an anal site to suggest that images of one man fucking another who is grimacing in pain, are homophobic?

Or that sites with men being tied up and sexually humiliated by other men are homophobic?

Or that sites which advocate barebacking are homophobic?

I bet the answer is no.

It's my contention and that of the men on my site that anal sex as it's practised by the majority of gay men today is redolent of unsubtle internalized homophobia.

And that anal in our culture is self-hating to the core.

And that anal penetration is dirty, dangerous, and demeaning.

Can you refute those points? You're welcome to try.

But what is not welcome is to call us homophobic for daring to disagree with the majority.

Jamie, there is nothing sacrosanct about gay male culture. It is not above criticism, and the greatest mistake the safer-sex community has made has been to adopt just that stance -- that if it's gay, we will "honor" it, no matter how dangerous or self-destructive or demeaning the act may be.

The reality it that there are a great many gay and bi men who are repelled by anal sex, anal promiscuity, and effeminacy, and my site gives them a voice.

Together, we are building a new culture -- one which is phallic, monogamous, and masculine.

We have asked two things of the majority gay (anal) culture:

1. To get out of our face -- that is, to stop pressuring us and coercing us to have a form of sex which is repugnant to us and dangerous to boot, and to stop pushing anal the way dealers push heroin.

2. And to allow us space in the gay press to express our views.

The majority culture will not do either. It does the opposite. The pressure to have anal sex is worse now than ever before, and our views are censored, even to the point of having our posts deleted from message boards.

But our numbers are growing, and in time I believe we will see a full discussion of these issues in the press.

In the meantime, I'd be glad to discuss them with you further.

But before we talk, I expect you to answer my questions, and to apologize for making the ugly and threatening statement that I should be put in jail for advocating safe sex and -- what really bothers you -- a vision of homosex that's at odds with your own.

PS -- For the guys on the site who may not know -- "fenwayhealth.org" is an LGBT community health center -- when I lived in Boston I supported their work -- and dated one of their nurse practitioners, very cute, we rubbed cocks, and we didn't get any diseases.

But what we have now is an employee of such a center, probably a "safer-sex educator," spending his working day threatening guys who don't like anal with jail for saying that FROT is safe.

When I talk about a dominant culture of anal sex, this is exactly what I mean -- and it's being paid for with your tax dollars and contributions.

Close to 500,000 deaths in the US alone from an anally-transmitted STD, and NOT ONE from frottage -- but Jamie thinks I should be in jail.

I write in defense of Bill Weintraub and the work he is doing with his web sites Heroic Homosex and Cockrub Warriors.

As I'm sure you are aware, Bill was recently attacked by Jamie Turner (jturner@fenwayhealth.org) who writes:

Bill's sites are not full of bad information. In addition, no where on any of his sites does he advocate that sex in any form is risk free. He consistantly tells people that there are risks with any behaviors and that being monogamous with a committed partner increases safety.

As I see it Bill's philosophy is far safer than the message coming from most HIV/AIDS programs which emphasize, "Use a condom everytime you have sex. Everytime." A message which in effect advoctes anal sex, the most dangerous behavior among men who have sex with men. This simplistic "use a condom" message which has been touted througout the HIV/AIDS epidemic, has helped to establish anal sex as the norm.

I like Bill have never had an STD. I'm 49 years old and have been married for 24 years. Although my relationship with my wife is now platonic, that was not always the case. Years ago when I came out to her, she was pleased to know that my behaviors had not put her life at risk. Contrast this if you will to the countless numbers of wives who have been infected by men who engage in anal sex? It is a growing problem, particularly in my community, the African American community.

I like Bill Weintraub advocate safer solutions not built around penetrative anal sex and have published such on my website the Blackstripe

So as I've said, Bill is to be commended. Jamie Turner at the very least reeducated. If that is not successful, then fired.

This is exactly the kind of CHEAP talk from paid so called 'helpers' which relegates any meaningful dialogue about the sexual activities of men who like to have sex with men to the lowest common denominator.

Jamie's statement is wildly inaccurate and worst of all a smug low blow. It is easy, as Bill points out in his reply, to scream 'homophobia' ... to anyone who talks a different talk than the majority. However simplistically put ... it is repugnant non the less.

You should be ashamed Jamie ... the truism holds ... if you can't say something intelligent ... shut the fuck up !! In this case know better of whom you speak before you shoot your mouth off. I'm fuckin' outraged and sorely riled that you have insulted Bill and the other members of this site ... haters of men who like to have sex with men we are not.

It is a timely reminder to us all ... I know it is the same here in the UK ... that just because someone manages to get hired ... doesn't mean they know one jot about their job or the issues it embraces. As usual this reflects badly on those who do the hiring and then before you know it an organisation has closed ranks and the carpet is lifted for the truth to be swept under.

This in response to the hostile commentary from Jamie Turner to Bill Weintraub.

Frot may not be entirely safe--Bill never said it was--but it's got to be a lot safer than any of that other stuff. Yet frot seems to be totally ignored in AIDS/STD education. To the extent this stuff is taxpayer supported I agree it's not right that the focus should be so narrow.

I do frot and not the other stuff. The whole approach to AIDS seems irrelevant to me and probably a lot of other people. I feel like an invisible non-person within the whole gay mainstream culture much like homosexuals in general were within mainstream society as a whole not so long ago. And, following the same analogy, I think our numbers are really far larger than anyone imagines.

The frot perspective needs to be heard more loud and clear. Bill's work is breaking new ground. As such, it is making some people uncomfortable. But that discomfort should not sanction bias on the part of a professional AIDS educator.

I expect your colleague will assert that he was speaking in a personal capacity, apologise to you and vow not to make the same 'mistake' again. Then you as a responsible manager must respond. I hope you find the time to address the issue of how your organisation deals with damaging and inaccurate remarks made by employees.

The posting made by Jamie Turner on the Heroichomosex site was reactionary in the extreme. If his words reflect his sincere beliefs then your organisation has failed in its selection process, if your aim was to employ thoughful and intelligent workers. Frottage is known to be amongst the safest forms of intimate male/male sexual acts. With the plethora of seriously unsafe websites around, it is spurious in the worst sense to willfully 'piss on the parade' of those who dare to discuss a male/male sexual paradigm which is alternative to the contemporary sterotype. Surely there is no one more committed to "safer" mating practices that Bill. He has consistently advocated and championed this in all his work for many, many years.

Your organization should be proud of his contributions to PRIDE and SAFETY.

It seems that for most 'gay men' when talking about sex, or physical intimacy, anal sex is the centrifuge around which all other things revolve. Or more to the point . spin off from. Guys can play around as they like . as long as anal is always an option . or not seen as overtly UNDESIREABLE.

Why so? Why should I accept the cultural principle that anal sex is 'normal'? Why must I accept such a premise before I am free to talk about the kind of sex . intimacy . that I particularly enjoy with other men?

As we saw with Turner's salvo . if one is not SEEN to accept the base 'norm' the 'butt fuck premise' then one is automatically intolerant and warped. The more an individual asserts and articulates their alternative premise . the louder and more vicious become the attacks from the protagonists of the status quo. This is no issue of semantics or policy. It is the way our cultural hegemony self fashions organisations who then disseminate the terms of the status quo . as if they have anything vital to tell us about life, love and intimate man2man sex. Sexually monolingual would be a polite description of them.

In my email to Lisa Whittemore . I urged her to engage with her colleagues and thrash out the issues raised in Turner's email. I affirmed the need for groups such as theirs to be alive to inverted homophobia . it can come from individuals in their organisations at anytime. Turner's reactionary headline ' put in jail' . is so transparently RAMPANT inverted homophobia . but poor sop . he doesn't even know it. There was no one in his team to help him with realise that.

Anyone who puts his or her head above the parapet is a warrior. That is a fact of human existence. We may agree or disagree ... slightly or fervently . but it takes spirit to engage the majority . the accepted status quo. i want to bring everyone up to date

here's the sequence of events

1. Jamie Turner sent me a letter of apology

in it, he apologized for the tone of his remarks but not the content

and of course he said he wasn't speaking for Fenway Health, and didn't do it on their dime, and so forth -- things which his bosses clearly leaned on him to say, and some of which were plainly untrue -- for example, he said he wasn't at work when he sent his original email, but the time stamp on the email tells a different story

2. so i wrote back to Lisa Whittemore saying that an apology alone was not sufficient, and that I wanted him to retract his charges of homophobia -- particularly since an email he'd written to Chuck Tarver suggested he was spreading that view to others

3. she responded that Turner was genuinely sorry, and that, besides Chuck, he hadn't discussed his views with anyone beyond his supervisor and herself and would not

well, i think that's the best we can do -- we forced Mr. Turner to back off, but we can't force him to rethink his beliefs, as beneficial as that would be for him and the people he thinks he's serving

and we made sure that he wasn't disseminating his spleen and his lies under the Fenway aegis

what we weren't able to do, despite all the emails to Ms. Whittemore, was get Fenway to acknowledge that there's pressure to do anal, that they, through their safer-sex programs and guys like Jamie Turner, are in part responsible for that pressure, and that the community would benefit from a closer examination of what messages are being sent by safer-sex educators and programs

that we couldn't reach Fenway in that way after all those letters is of course kinda pitiful

but it's not our fault and it's not us who are to be pitied

it's the gay male mainstream and, in this case, the safer-sex establishment, which will not allow any criticism of anal, effeminacy, or promiscuity, and which is, under the guise of cultural diversity and tolerance, not just supporting but actually enforcing deadly behaviors among its followers

what would it take to reach an organization like Fenway?

the answer, in my opinion, is scrutiny by the press, and in order for that to happen the press has to see the story as newsworthy

something which the press might consider newsworthy would be a demonstration -- peaceable and legal -- outside the Fenway offices

i don't live anywhere near Boston, and i doubt that we have enough people to do that there, though we may -- so if you're interested, just say so

but eventually we have to leave the net and go into the real world

I am 23 years old, born 1979 here in Dublin.

I was lucky to date that I never contracted anything, I could easily have been infected with anything from Hepatitis to HIV very easily.

There is hardly any FREE information in schools or anywhere else about SAFER METHODS OF GAY SEX.

But it never stops there. The death toll, the disease, the lives ruined and the divisions in the gay community and the bad press it causes are still rampant to this day, and you do nothing about it except glorify the situation, why, I do not know?

Hi Jamie,

If you will please point out the innacuracies on the sites.

The point that I see Bill make over and over is that "unbroken skin" is one of the best barriers to disease transmission. He does not say it is 100% effective. This is even acknowledged by the CDC although for some reason, they and HIV/AIDS service organizations downplay this in favor of pushing condoms and penetrative anal sex.

Truth is penetration is dangerous! More disease has been transmitted by broken condoms than by non-penetrative sexual behaviors.

The most powerful point that Weintraub makes on his site is that anal sex is not something all of us desire, yet the gay male (msm) culture forces it on all.

If you look at the site closely, you will see testimony after testimony from men who have been forced into anal sex or because they refuse to engage in anal sex are unable to find partners. That is the reality that those of us who do not engage in anal sex face.

Regarding your charge of homophobia, I suggest you read the sites more closely. What Weintraub is pointing out is the misogyny inherent in gay male culture. He makes the point that it is connected to the anal culture. I don't know about you but I have often heard men refer to bottoms as "boy pussy, man pussy, sluts, bitches, hoes, miss thang, etc."

This blatant disrespect for the feminine is not Weintraub's doing. He merely points out its existence. Sounds to me like you're shooting the messenger. I know Bill well enough to know that he does not disrespect men who are naturally feminine, nor does he suggest that we ignore our feminine sides. What he decries is the psuedo feminization promoted by gay male anal sex culture.

I like Weintraub am a transplanted Bostonian. I helped get information about the Fenway Community Health Center on the air at WRBB when I managed that station during the late 1970s, early 1980s.

Saying that someone should be jailed is a serious indictment. I only hope you are as vigilant with those who operate "bareback" and "bug chasing" sites and those who send "sex party" invitations via e-mail. They are far more numerous on the internet that sites promoting non-penetrative behavior. And by all means, please point out the inaccuracies on Bill Weintraub's sites.

let's be clear guys -- there are no inaccuracies or bad information on the site

if there were, Jamie Turner would have written a letter saying "Dear Mr. Weintraub, I like your site, but you are mistaken on the following points."

he didn't write such a letter because he couldn't -- instead he said "you should be in jail, you're a homophobe"

those sorts of ad hom attacks are a dead giveaway that the person making them doesn't have a substantive argument

some guys were surprised that i'd paid any attention to the letter at all

the reason i did so was because of Fenway Health -- they're a substantial community organization and their employees can't be allowed to spread these sorts of lies
