David and Jonathan -- Fellow Warriors and More :
David's memoir of his fully male relationship with Jonathan
5-2-11
Who would have guessed that a little shepherd boy could not only meet and become the intimate companion of a warrior prince and heir to the throne, but as later circumstances dictated, this ex shepherd would become king himself! Well this is part of that story and a story in its own right, a story of war and love, and how me having faith in the Warrior God meant I could take on that big Philistine, Goliath, without fear, and win (1 Samuel 17;37). Yes he was BIG (1 Samuel 17;4) six cubits and a span (about 9 feet 6 inches) tall, but I knew I had the Warrior God looking out for me (Psalm 23) so how could I fail?
Before going onto the battlefield I tried on some armour but it was to big and clumsy and I could hardly walk in it, so I got stripped down something like the warriors I had heard of from across the Western Sea, the Greeks by name.
I then got some stones and put them in my bag, then I got my slingshot and a staff, and out I went, not meaning to make him laugh but as I came forward I think he was wondering if I was the best the Hebrews could send as a champion?
Then he saw my staff and said "Am I a dog? that you come to me with a stick!" But I let him know he may have a sword and spear, but it is not the weapon but the fact that I was there in the name of the Warrior God, and so it was His battle and He would win so with His courage inside me I ran to meet Goliath, I reached into my bag and let Him guide it to the right stone, then put it into my slingshot, brought it up to speed, and let the stone fly!
Wham! right between the eyes, and down he went. Then a gasp came not from him but from the rest of the Philistine army. I then ran right up to him and not having a sword took his and chopped his head off -- he wouldn't get up after that! So I went back to King Saul with my war trophies, Goliath's head and sword, as the Philistines ran and were chased by our warrior army.
After our victory it was party time and at this I met the great love of my life Jonathan, and there was an immediate manly bond, (1 Samuel 18: 1--3) we admired each other's masculinity and were drawn to each other because of this and our warriorhood.
But then things started to go wrong as a few days later King Saul heard about a song some women were singing, a victory song, but it upset him because of the exact words which gave me more credit for the victory than him, a mistake after all because he was the KING (1 Samuel 18:7); and he even wanted me dead, so Jonathan and I were forced apart (1 Samuel chapter 18 to chapter 23:17).
But we were able to meet and we agreed he would let me know if his father King Saul really did want me dead and if I had to escape, so forcing us apart permanently. As it turned out this was the case, (1 Samuel 20: 35--42) and when I realised this and knew how I was going miss him -- boy did I cry (verse 41).
Yet we still managed to meet one last time and strengthen our relationship (1 Samuel 23:18). Then came the final end when war came again with the Philistines, were they trying to regain their Warrior status? Well they managed to kill King Saul and his sons including that great Warrior and Prince Jonathan, who was my lover and I say lover because we loved each other as only men can, and even as the years pass my love for him does not pass, yes I have had women come into my life and go out of it. But never ever another love like his (2 Samuel 1:26). I will always miss him.
David and Jonathan forever.
Afterword from Warrior Brian
When I submitted this story to Bill, I subtitled it "David's memoir of his fully male relationship with Jonathan."
What I have tried to bring across in this story, then, is simply this, the man to man love of two warriors, warriors who were devoted and faithful to each other -- and this is SO important in man to man relationships.
So the main point I was trying to make by bringing the events together as best as I could was to show how two masculine men could have a strong and faithful love for each other.
With Warrior Love,
Brian

The masculinity of men flows from their group. Their natural masculinity combines and gets manifold when masculine men unite. The camaraderie, mutual understanding, support, learning the ways of the world as a male, fighting together, dealing with roughs and toughs of life together -- they all help to develop the natural masculinity that exists within them.
They had many words for struggle and combat and fighting and strife -- maches, eris, hamilla, agon, polemos, ares -- and athlos, the word from which we derive our word "athlete."
In Greece, athletai could be rivals on the playing field or the battlefield.
